About I-55

I-55 is Southeast Missouri's major interstate. It runs north-south parallel to the Mississippi River and US 61. Cape Girardeau is connected to St. Louis, Chicago, Memphis, and New Orleans by I-55. A spur, I-155, branches off near Caruthersville and heads eastward to Dyersburg, TN. In addition, I-57 terminates at I-55 near Sikeston.

Below is a rough draft exit chart. It covers everything from the Arkansas border northward to Exit 175. The chart should be fairly self-explanatory, excerpt perhaps for the abbreviations used to designate roads:

Route A - Missouri state secondary road.

MO 177 - Missouri state (primary) highway.

US 61 - US highway.

I-155 - Interstate.

BL 55 - Interstate business loop. (I-55 has business loops through New Madrid and Cape Girardeau/Jackson.)

"The worst interchange in Missouri" according to a Southeast Missourian editorial.

Michael G. Koerner calls this a "neat road place" in his January 29, 2000 Highway Feature of the Week dedicated to this interchange, but Scott City residents would probably argue otherwise.

This interchange was recently rebuilt, but it is still unable to handle the Wal-Mart induced traffic. MoDOT has hinted at the possibility of retrofitting this interchange as a SPUI, but that would be a long-term project.

The two I-55 overpasses are being rebuilt to make room for a six lane US 61. The local Procter & Gamble factory is expanding and traffic on US 61/MO 177 is expected to increase dramatically, especially during shift changes at the plant. This interchange was only recently renovated, but that was before the factory announced its expansion. Hopefully MoDOT will get it right with "Version 3.0".
