Bridges
[Lowndes Bridge]
Iron bridge near Lowndes (Wayne Co.) at the appropriately named Iron Bridge Conservation Area

[Wappapello Bridge]
The Army Corps of Engineers maintains a river gauge at a place called "Iron Bridge, Mo." This 1911 through truss is located just downstream from the Wappapello Dam.

Living in a state with perpetual highway funding problems is not necessarily a bad thing. For one thing, many interesting historic bridges remain standing and in use, with no immediate plans for replacements. It's not unusual to find narrow iron bridges on state primary highways. And in some cash-strapped counties (especially Bollinger), you're more likely to find an interesting iron or wood plank bridge rather than a boring new concrete span on county roads.

Browse a list of some of these historic bridges, with photos and descriptions of their exact locations. Many of these bridges are only a short distance away from the paved road -- if you know where to look...

Interstates
Southeast Missouri is connected to the rest of the country by two major interstates: I-55 and I-57.

Interstate 55

I-55 is the north-south backbone of Southeast Missouri, connecting the region to St. Louis and Memphis. Near Caruthersville, MO, I-155, a spur, branches of off I-55 and heads eastward into Tennessee.

Interstate 57

I-57 is the backbone of Southern Illinois. The southern end terminates in Missouri near Sikeston; the northern end terminates at Chicago.

The Cape Rock Gazetteer
The Big Green Signs tell us the names of approaching towns, but we rarely stop to think of the origins of these names. Why is Advance advancing? If Pemiscot County is so flat, how can there be a Hayti Heights? Where is the marble in Marble Hill? And just who is this Girardeau guy, anyway? Browse the Gazetteer for the answers to some of these questions -- along with everything else you could possibly want to know about the cities and towns of Southeast Missouri.

Maps
See the Gazetteer for a large collection of links to Missouri maps -- both old and new.

Railroads
Before the dominance of automobiles, some towns in the swampland of Southeast Missouri were only practically reachable by train. Browse the Railroads page for a list of all of the railroad lines in this part of the state.
